THE BOAT

Illustration / Brand Identity / Web

An Arts Council England funded project, designed to challenge perceptions of immigration via an illustrated children’s story book. The book was designed and produced as a concept piece and accompanies freely-available teaching resources sparked from a need to better engage young minds on the difficult subject of immigration.

The project included the design and development of a website to showcase the book and story – illustrations were dissected and recreated in parallax layers, designed to work on phones with oscilloscope functionality.

The book has since been translated and published in German (Das Boot) via the University of Graz.

The project started in October 2016 in partnership with Professor of Children’s Writing, Andrew Melrose, and the University of Winchester. The story and illustrations were developed over 12 months, culminating in a small-batch print run of hard copies with copper foiled, letterpressed cover, centre spread and die-cut pages using G. F. Smith papers.
